CAPTCHA

Red Arrow Gallery (Nashville) | 2021

  • (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart)

After a year lived virtually [due to the COVID-19 pandemic] I’ve become intimately familiar with CAPTCHA. Checking boxes? Writing out what letters and numbers I see? Selecting all the photos with street lights? Challenge accepted! I am not a robot.

Growing up, my parents had a secret signal they would give each other to prove they were human, rather than a robot or alien pretending to be them. Now, my partner and I have a similar arrangement, a sign only we know and use to test if each other is still who we say we are; an in-person, real-world, CAPTCHA.

This exhibition explores other real-world CAPTCHAs, out there waiting for us, to test for our humanity.
