Shit Arlo Says

Modfellows Art Gallery (Nashville) | 2020

  • Curatorial Statement by Pam Marlene Taylor:

This exhibition visually encapsulated the concepts Danielle Krysa (AKA The Jealous Curator) and I were developing for her TEDxNashville talk titled "How to Cut Creativity Out of Your Life," ironically advising on how not to be an artist. Serving as her TED speaker coach, I became intimately acquainted with "Arlo" - her inner critic. Ultimately, we decided to give Arlo a voice in the culmination of this exhibition.

Attendees were invited to contribute their own inner critic voices to the wall using post-it notes, while Arlo's voice resounded loudly and clearly through laser-cut wooden letters adorning the walls among the many works Danielle created to represent her (or rather, Arlo's) insecurities.

    Artist Statement by Danielle Krysa:

Do you ever hear a little voice in your head? It questions your choices, your skills, and probably even the pants you’re wearing right now (you look great, by the way). My voice’s name is Arlo, and he’s an asshole. He shouts out insults and opinions all day, with only one goal - to stop me from being creative. “Shit Arlo Says” is exactly that. The doubts, questions, and lies he delivers daily - from my material and palette choices, to scale and subject matter - have been used as direct inspiration for this series of mixed media collages. “Oh shit, is this a craft?” – no Arlo, you dick, it’s art.
